Safely Remove Hardware

After installing a Cable modem a "Safely Remove Hardware" icon has
manifested itself in the system tray. Clicking it brings up a dialog to
remove the modem. I know I can hide it as inactive but is it possible to
remove it completely. Modem will never want to be removed. Where can I find
out more about this feature?

Right-click on your Taskbar and select:

Properties > Customize and click once on the
"Safely Remove Hardware Icon". From its drop-down
menu, select "always hide" and click "apply".

That's odd. Adding something evidently makes the computer think
something has been removed and is now ready to be physically taken out.
Idea: check on properties of "My Computer" Hardware Tab, Device
Manager and see if there is any hardware which is *supposed* to be
working, but now no longer is. May give a clue.
 
If I understand it's function correctly, the "safely remove hardware"
function is used to flush the write buffers of a USB device. I am cautioned
in my digital camera manual to use this function before disconnecting either
the camera or the card reader. For what it's worth, when I use the function
to disconnect my camera, the available hardware items listed includes my
cable modem. I simply ignore it since I don't want to remove it.
