Safely remove Hardware icon

I guess I'm stuck on stupid. I recently built 2 pc's. both have the same
operating system - Windows XP Pro x64, hard drives - Seagate Barracuda, and
NForce 4 chipset. Both pc's have the "Hide inactive icons" unchecked. Why
does one pc show the Safely remove hardware icon for my Seagate but the other
pc doesn't?
When I built the first of the 2 pc's, I loaded x64 and the system drivers
and noticed the icon. I immediatly didn't like that and reformatted, reloaded
x64 and drivers and the icon was not there. I have not done that with the
second pc which has the icon.
I can't say whether or not by reformatting and reinstalling the operating
system and drivers had an affect or if there was something different in the
way I installed them the first time between the 2 pc's.
Yes, I do know that the icon is not a bug or an issue...it's just
unsightly.
Any comments will be appreciated.

My observation seems to be that the icon is there only if you have
devices that may need to be safely removed. For example, I have 2
old-ish USB devices, an HP scanner that wass originally designed for
W98 and a modem, and both those appear "behind" the icon. Other USB
devices such as my HP DeskJet and Canon camera never appear and I
assumed that they don't need to be "safely removed" and that just
unplugging them/switching off does the trick.

I'm only speaking from what I see and not from any technical knowledge
of the topic!

I think XP is just flaky. I have a SmartMedia card reader that popped up the
"Safely Remove.." icon in the systray for several months. It then
disappeared. I use this thing several times a week, so it's not like it was
unused. One day I pulled the card too soon and ended up having to reformat
it. I now have the icon on my desktop, and always use it since that
experience.

Your observations are correct. but the only device showing up to be removed
is the Seagate hardrive, which cannot be removed.

I built a system a few months ago, and Nforce4 based system such as
yourself, and had the same problem. My sata hard drives , would show up in
the safely remove hardware icon in the notification tray - an annoyance.

I ran into some stability issues with my newly built system, and was able to
resove it, by getting rid of the Nvidia IDE sw drivers.
When you install the Nforce4 motherboard drivers, you are given the option ,
toward the end of the install, of installing the Nvidia IDE sw drivers or
not. When I first installed, I chose to install those drivers. To get rid of
the ide sw drivers, I had to uninstall the Nforce4 mb drivers, reboot, then
reinstall, except - electing NOT to install the IDE SW drivers toward the
end of the install. By doing this, it just used the standard Microsoft IDE
drivers.

The end result of my getting rid of the Nvidia IDE SW drivers, was more
stability, and it also got rid of that " safely remove hardware" icon .

Now, your mileage may vary, but if your hard drive is sata, I would just
about be willing to bet, you elected to install the Nvidia IDE SW drivers,
and getting rid of them, would probably get rid of that safely remove
hardware icon as well...
