There is a problem with a notebook running on Windows
2000 Professional SP4, somehow the "safely remove
hardware" icon is missing from the taskbar. When I
connect a USB external hard disk nothing visible
happens. But if I open up Windows Explorer, I can see
the drive and able to access it. However, if I need to
unplug the external drive, I cannot stop the device first
as the icon is missing from the taskbar. How can I
enable the icon back. This problem only happens
recently. Thanks in advanced.

I'm using WinXP. I lost my "Safely Remove Hardware" icon the other day. Like
you I had no joy with my Google search but the only change I made to my
computer in the previous day was to install UPnP (Add or Remove programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components, Networking Services, Details, Universal Plug
and Play.)

I uninstalled UPnP, rebooted, and the icon came back, reinstalled UPnP,
rebooted and the icon disappeared. Uninstalled etc.

I don't know if this will be your answer but it's worth doing a few cycles
and seeing what happens. I'd be interested to hear.

Brian
