Hello. I'm using WinXP Home. Recently the "Safely Remove
Hardware" icon that resides in the lower right hand
corner is gone. Whenever I remove any hardware I unplu
them directly. It's not good as my system will hang or
even crash. I do not want to shut down my laptop to
remove the hardware as well. Please reply. Thx!

You sure it's not hidden? Click the chevron < at the left of the
Notification Area.

Also check in device manager...
Press Windows key (the one with the flag) and the PAUSE key simultaneously.
Click HARDWARE tab|DEVICE MANAGER button.
Double-click the drive in question, then click the POLICY tab.
View the removal options, and make the appropriate choice.

The icon will not display if you haven't used it in a while ... if you want
to always show the icon, Rt-click the notification area, select 'Properties'
and click the 'Customize' button. Scroll down to the 'Safely Remove
Hardware' icon, select the 'Behavior' column to the right of it, click on
the chevron to display options and select 'always show'.
