Larry

I am using a portable computer that has modular bays for
either a zip drive, 3.5" floppy, or CD/RW drive. Since
upgrading to XP Pro, I no longer have the Softex Bay
Manager software as this is not compatible with XP. At
first, there was an icon in the taskbar that allowed me
to stop that device, and then I could "hot swap" devices
without rebooting. Now that icon is not shown, and if a
device is stopped, and another device inserted into the
bay, that new device is not recognized until the system
is rebooted.

I have gone to the Start - Control Panel - Taskbar /
Start menu, and verified that this feature is selected to
be shown (both all the time, and to hide when inactive).
It will not appear on the taskbar.

Has anyone experienced this issue, and if so, what
corrective measures do you recommend? I also download
and install only critical updates for the operating
system. Your assistance is greatly appreciated,
thanks, Larry

Larry: I've been wrestling with XP tray icon problems
myself for the past few weeks, and I find it perplexing
that icons like "Safely Remove Hardware" seem to have a
mind of their own.

I appreciated FredP's append, concerning Customizing for
Hiding Inactive Icons, and I explored that for my problem
of the disappearing icon but it didn't bring the icon
back, in my case.

Finally, remembering someone else's append about you have
to log on to XP with a password to make your tray icons
appear (which was true! ... but makes little sense to
me.), I decided to restart, logged on under my
active "Guest" account, then logged off/on under my usual
user name, and the icons had all returned correctly.

I hope this works for you, also. (I'm sure we both hope
that Microsoft enhances this area in the future.)

Regards, Dan
