Safely Remove Hardware - Failure/Error Message

System: Windows XP Pro SP2. I have 2 external USB HDD. One is effectively
invisible in that it is entirely occupied by a hidden Acronis "Safe Zone"
partition. The other is used to transfer backups or large files to a
computer located elsewhere. Recently, without changing any drivers or
hardware, I am getting the following error message when clicking the safe
removal tray icon:

An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
hotplug.dll"

Any notions as to what may have caused this?

I have basically the same problem. Also XP Pro SP2, 3 external USB HDDs,
Acronis TrueImage - but not using safe zone.

'An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
hotplug.dll"' error appeared out of the blue while attempting to 'safely
disconnect hardware' 4 days ago. Tried everything to get rid of it -
including sector-by-sector restore of earlier internal (SATA) disk image,
running sfc.exe, uninstalling TrueImage - even reflashing the BIOS. I'm at a
loss and now thinking of ways to work around the problem.

I'll be watching this thread with interest.

Yes. I tried a restore using Acronis Safe Zone on the one USB HD. Same
problem. I wonder if it is an Acronis-related problem, but Googling has
revealed nothing. It's a PITA, especially as that particular USB HD has
no on/off switch. I used to have no problem with either USB, so it's
plainly nothing to do with multiple external drives. Nor with the fact
that one is hidden, and the other visible to Windows.
 
I suppose the only way to know whether or not it's not an Acronis related
problem is to rebuild from scratch - something I'd rather avoid if possible
having only just done that, at considerable time expense. Reading your post
prompted me to uninstall Acronis because that was a common feature, but it
made no difference. However my C: drive was restored from an Acronis image so
I'm not sure if its involvement in this problem can be ruled out

I've been running TrueImage 11.0 which has been somewhat problematic, with
backups validating ok from Windows but refusing to restore from Acronis
emergency bootup. I'll be communicating this to Acronis together with the
suggestion that the 'safely remove' failure may be related. I'll report back
as soon as I have a response.

Another common factor. Upgraded about a month back. Hmmm!
 
I had the same problem and it seems to be associated with Acronis TI 11. I
uninstalled Acronis TI 11 and then ran a program called "Registry Mechanic"
and it fixed the problem. Apparently there are a number of programs that
will fix this. Such as "Regisrty Fix", Registry Mechanic" and "Registry
Easy" to name a few. Hope this helps.

Thanks for this. Pity it might be Acronis, as I have come to depend on
it's image backups.
 
Sorry, I guess I jumped the gun. As sson as reinstalled Acronis the problem
came back. The problem started after I did a back up and recovery with
Acronis TI 11. I uninstalled TI 11 and used one of the registry fix programs
and the problem seemed to be gone. I reinstalled Acronis 10, which I never
had a problem with, and the problem reappeared.
