Can I safely remove (via XPTweakui) the icons for Internet Explorer, My
Computer, My Documents and My Network Places without causing
functionality problems? (I'm asking because I recall that I couldn't
safely remove some of these icons from the desktop in my old Windows
2000 system.)

do you want them removed from the system? I'm not sure if that can be done,
but you can remove them from desktop. Go to display in Control
Panel>desktop>customize>and de-select okay/apply your way out. If you want
to remove them from the Start Menu, go to Start Menu, right
click>properties>start menu>customize>advance>select 'Don't display this
item' to those you don't want displayed.

Right-click on your Desktop and select:
Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop >
General Tab, then uncheck the Desktop icons
you do not want displayed, click OK.

OK. Thank you. I used XPTweakui to remove them from the desktop. I
juts wanted to make sure it was safe to do so given based on my
experience of having been warned not to remove them from the W2K desktop.

good job, glad it all worked out.
