Whenever I try and start outlook (2002) I get an error
message

Outlook failed to start correctly last time. Starting
Outlook in safe mode will help you correct or isolate a
startup problem in order to successfully start the
program. Some functionality may be disabled in this mode.

I have found the error message on the microsoft knowledge
base but there is no information on how to correct it
other than check for "disabled items"
My disabled items dialogue box never displays anything
disabled and I do not know what the error is or how to
fix it.

can anybody guide me on where to go from here ?

regards Alan

When you start Outlook in safe mode the add-ins are disabled. You can enable
and disable the add-ins in Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button Advanced
Options-> button Add-in Manager/COM Add-ins. Most of the times these are the
cause of Outlook not starting properly. Make sure all of these add-ins are
properly installed and compatible with your Outlook version.

Thank you,

My only add on is Ella , a spam control program. I will
delete it and reinstall.

the only add in was Ella, I have uninstalled it but it
has not made any difference

There are no disabled items

Yes I have run office repair with no results, my son is a
second user and his outlook is working fine, in a way it
points to Ella as that is the only difference in our
setup, yet deleting (controll panel add/del ) did not
cure the problem

Locate outcmd.dat and extend.dat and rename them to .old to reset the
Toolbar and Extensions configurations (add-ins)
If this doesn't work you can additionally recreate your mail profile in
Control panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles...
