Safe mode???

Hi Everyon
I am having real problems trying to get into safe mode, when I boot up my pc I press the F8 key, then I get a black background with text, with a blue square screen in the middle of the window saying, Floppy, IDE-0, CDROM, NETWORK
But no safe mode, what am I doing wrong? I am using windows xp. What's really annoying is that I have got into safe mode in the past, I remember it took me ages.
What am I doing wrong, according to my notes pressing the F8 key should get me in ther

On reboot start pecking the f8 key like at a 1/2 second intervals or a tad
faster. If you miss, try again.

Your BIOS probably has some setting that gives you the boot selection screen
when you tap on F8.

What you have to do is - after you get that boot selection screen, highlight the
hard drive and press Enter and then immediately start tapping F8 again and then
you should get the Advanced Menu Screen where you can choose Safe Mode.
