Safe Mode use

Currently I have a major problem with spyware on my computer. I enter safe
mode and use the system admin account to try to clean it. When I attempt to
start windows defender, it says the service needs to be started. I attempt to
start the service and it tells me that it cannot be run in safe mode. I would
think, they would allow that service to run in safe mode to try and fix my
spyware issues instead of 'normal' mode where the spyware is running rampant.
Hopefully I am not alone in this wish. I am running XP SP2 and
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1372.0
Signature Version: 1.14.1410.10

Hello Mike,

Version 1.1.1347.0 is out. Try with this Version in Safe Mode.

Users who normally select advanced Spynet membership should be aware that
the install process will set you back to basic membership, so it's a good
idea to revisit both the Spynet membership area of Tools, and the Options
area--to see what's different, and check that your old choices have been
preserved.

I have the latest version now and still it cannot be run in safe mode. I fear
that I may have to reformat as my computer is getting worse and crashes
before defender or any other anti-spyware application can remove it. Please
MS, allow Defender to run in safe mode as the spyware seems to not affect it
in safe mode. Thanks for the help Engel.

I uninstalled Defender several weeks ago, but the build I had then would scan
in safe mode. Is this a unique case or is Defender generally not able to scan
in safe mode now? I would try a few things to get it running: Deselect the
option to update before scanning in general settings. Also go into services
and try to start it manually. Of course, it is also possible that the malware
has managed to disble Defender. It might be helpful to use F Secure's
Blacklight or SystemInternal RootkitRevealer to see if they find any hidden
files and processes. If they did, you could try to clean the malware with an
anti-trojan program after disabling the hiddden process.

Thanks - I'd been meaning to speak up here, but it has been a while since I
tested Defender in safe mode, and I wanted to be certain. I, too, believe
Windows Defender should run in safe mode--at least on XP--I don't think I've
done this on Windows 2000--but I believe this thread is abou XP.
You might try, instead of safe mode, running MSCONFIG and hitting diagnostic
startup, and restarting, to see if that makes things easier. And I like Old
Rebel's suggestions, and would maybe add scanning/cleaning with another
product as well. If you want to stick with Microsoft, starting in safe mode
with networking and doing a protection scan at safety.live.com would be
good.

Hi Bill,

FYI

I finish to run a Quick scan in safe-mode (F8), with a XP all updated, and
run perfect.

Engel is correct here, you should be able to run Defender in safe mode once
installed. If you are running into issues, please let us know so we can
investigate.
