I installed a back up hard drive. In the boot process, windows logo and
status bar showed up fine. From that point on the screen was black. It did
boot up, but could not see anything. By sheer luck I booted with "F8" and
enabled VGA. It booted fine. My question is : Why did I need to enable VGA?
This is a clone of a dard drive that worked fine. I also booted on the
cloned hard drive when it was created with no problem. All this was done on
the same computer.

There is a good chance it redetected your video card and set it to it's
native resolution which your monitor doesn't support..
