Safe Mode- blank?

When Safe Mode is opened, I see a black screen with the Safe Mode legend in
each corner, as expected.

But nothing else is visible, the screen is blank.

I can call up Task Manager with the keyboard, but that's all. No start
menu, no desktop, taskbar, system tray, etc.

Advice?

What happens if you logon as a new user? (create a new user account in Users
and Passwords)

Try to launch explorer.exe from the Task Manager.

You are on the right track, the reason I saw the black screen was I had
selected Safe Mode with Command Prompt, so even with the CP screen closed,
no video drivers have been loaded, I guess.

When I just select Safe Mode, I get the normal desktop with a black
background, still usable.
