Safe downloading sites

With all the concern about spyware, viruses and the like, how can we know
who to trust?

For example, someone new to this newsgroup does not kow the "regulars" so
what criteria can we use to be reasonably sure that the sites recommended
herein are safe?

Thanks - I'd thought of doing just that. I've been reading about all sorts
of things to try and sites to download them from, but have been printing out
the responses to save for a later date.

So much to learn, so little time....

I wish more people asked this question.

In addition to the good advice Jupiter Jones gave you, I'd add the
following -

You can use Google Groups to search an archive of most newsgroups, so you
can check the "history" of a particular poster if you receive advice from
them that makes you wary. http://groups.google.com

As for downloads - where possible go to the "official source" for a file -
if you want to update Apple's Quicktime or you got an iPod for christmas and
want to download software for it, then go to Apple's site directly rather
than download from a third party site.

Microsoft updates for your operating system should ideally be downloaded via
the windows update shortcut in your start menu, or at the very least from
their website as above, never from 3rd party websites and never from emails
you didn't request.
