In a previous question about deleting NAV updates, potiki wrote "the way to
stay safe is to not let your system become compromised in the first place.
A daily updated AV utility should be the last layer of security you rely
on.....".
As a newbie, my question is other than have a firewall, not giving out your
address and not opening emails that are suspicious, what should be done?
Thanks in advance.

Application of common sense.

Mainly,

1) Keeping up to date with Windows Updates.
2) Turn off Preview Pane if you insist on using Outlook/Outlook
Express.
3) Deleting messages that look dodgy.
4) Not opening attachments in e-mails unless specifically requested.

a good idea to be using a hotmail or this type of email address/account for
newsgroups?

If (e-mail address removed) is a valid address for you, you're all ready ripe for
harvesting by spam bots and viruses. If hotmail, et al, bounce messages
when they are full I wouldn't use them as they'll be returned to the "From"
address which could be an innocent 4th party. If you're not interested in
getting mail from the NG you could change your From to
(e-mail address removed). They delete any mail received. I recommend
putting OE in the restricted zone and checking "Warn me when other
applications try to send email as me" and if a casual user, "Do not allow
attachments to be saved or opened that potentially could be a virus"
(Tools/Options/..Security), check "Read all messages in plan text" (..Read).
I differ on the Preview Pane - keep your system updated by receiving MS
update notifications (http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/) and
visiting their site at least weekly

BooBoo wrote the following request of confirmation as I am getting confused

Uncheck "Auto download messages in preview pane"
Uncheck "Read all messages in plain text"

Confirm Mail sending format "HTML"
News sending format "Plain text"
Thanks again for the patience.
