I have Windows 2000, and the other day i made the mistake of deleting
Oksp3.exe (though my winver says Service Pack 4.) I've restored it from the
Recycle Bin, and its icon is back on the desktop, but my computer is still a
mess. The visual is terrible, my bookmarks don't work, and when i tried to
open a game
i have installed on my computer, i got the following message: "Error: Access
violation at 0x6802D476 (tried to read from 0x0000320) program terminated."
When i try to import Oksp3.exe to the Restore Wizard, i get a message saying,
"The backup file is unusable."
I also deleted delinfe.EXE, but i think that was something concerning
the Brother multi-function hardware, which is fine.

As Dave Patrick mentioned, neither of those two files are part of the
standard Wndows distribution.

Here's what you need to do:
Make sure your Anti-Virus signatures are up to date
Make sure your Adware signatures are up to date
Make sure your Malware signatures are up to date

If you don't have an Adware program, Ad Aware from Lavasoft is pretty good
If you don't have a Malware program, Spybot S&D from Safer-Networking is
pretty good

After all signatures are up to date, reboot into safe mode.
Run your A/V program
Reboot into safe mode
Run your Adware program
Reboot into safe mode
Run your Malware program
Reboot normally

If you still have problems then you'll need to do an "Inplace upgrade/Repair
install". Google for the how-to.

To start with have a look at your system's device manager to see whether
there are any yellow question marks shown in there. R. click My
Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager

What do i do once i find the yellow question marks? (By the way, though i
know you're not the one who used the expression, do you know what AFAIK
stands for?)
Would having deleted and then restored those two files be causing my
computer all these problems? One other question: I've come across a message
saying, "Display properties settings needs to be such-and-such a number of
bits." I've looked in Control Panel-Display-Settings and not found any
reference to bits. Do you know where to change the number of bits? Thank you.

Anyone know what i'm supposed to do once i find the yellow question marks?

(By the way, fantastic handle. "Hey Mom, guess what i'm called on the
Internet!") OK, i've been away for a few days, hoping for a response from
Microsoft, but-- even though i have Microsoft on my whitelist and have
checked my Bulk folder just in case--i haven't seen any words of wisdom from
anyone there. I thought
my computer came with virus protection, but when i searched "antivirus," i
came up with nothing. So i bought Norton Antivirus 2007--only to find i can't
install it because, on top of everything else, the computer is now not able
to perceive a CD in the CD ROM. How do i find the Inplace upgrade/Repair
install? I've Skroogled that phrase by itself, IuRi + Windows and "Windows
2000 IuRi." Something
else i've wondered about: It used to be that if you started to delete
something essential, you'd get a warning message. Does that just not happen
any more?

I finally had to take my computer in and have the OS reinstalled. It wasn't
too bad--$58, and he saved all my data, besides giving me a lot of advice. I
just want to thank everyone who offered their help; all of you--Dave, Frank,
Paul and CT--really helped restore my faith in computer people. The first guy
i ever knew who knew computers was Jim Reuss, a 13-year-old super-genius in
'68 who wrote a column called "If You don't Love Computers..." and who was a
quiet, good-hearted, salt-of-the-earth type. The contact i had with computer
people over the years was with people who were quiet, even shy, but really
brainy and nice people. Then i went to a Defcon! I'm sure there were some
nice folks hiding there, but the ones i met were aggressively obnoxious, and
i don't think most of them could even get into Mensa. So thank you for
letting me know there are still "real" computer people around.
