Hi,
when I powered my computer on today, it scared me - for the first time
- with a "click-clack... click-clack... click-clack" noise which I
only know from failing HDDs. There were only three or four
click-clacks, then the system booted normally and I could access all
my data. (When I power-cycled the system later with a pause in
between, it just booted normally.) In case this is relevant, the room
was somewhat colder than usual, maybe 15° C.
So I updated my backups, and ran the vendor diagnostic tools on my
drives, a WD 800BB and a Samsung SP1203N. Both completed without
errors. The Samsung tool also performed a Spin-Up test, which also
passed without errors.
Still suspicious, I installed a SMART readout tool for Windows. All
the parameters look great for both drives, only one slightly puzzles
me: On the net, I read that the "Spin Up Time" parameter is good when
above 80 and acceptable when in the 70-80 range. On my Samsung, the
current value is 67 with a worst of 66.
Strangely enough, the Samsung drive does not specify a threshold for
this value (ie, it is zero). The WD800, on the other hand, shows a
value of 98, 93 worst, with a 21 threshold.
So what does this mean? Do Samsung drives just use a different scale
for this value, or is this value a cause for concern?
Thanks,
Robert
