Is there anything for W-98 that lets users "play" with the S.M.A.R.T. (self
testing) drives?

I know when I start my W-98 system I get a "flash" of the S.M.A.R.T.
display.

Thanks

Not sure what you mean by "play" but 'Speedfan' has a tab which shows
SMART data for any - eh - SMART HDD. Also 'HD Tune' has this data.

Not sure what you are looking for, but look up "HDTune". It's a fine drive
utility that lists all your SMART parameters.

HDD Health from Panterasoft.com is a pretty good util. I have been
using this for a long time and it has given me a great deal of info
regarding the conditions of my HD's...it warned me months in advance of
an impending crash.

Bob, you like "one file wonders". HDD Health seems to work fine as an
executable, after conversion from install. It reported my SMART
parameters in W2K.

HDD Health is a full-featured failure-prediction agentSitting in the
system tray, it monitors hard disks and alerts you to impending failure.
The program uses Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.)
built into all new hard disks, and can predict failures on your hard
drives. A host of alerting features include email, local pop-up messages,
net messages, and event logging, while using no system resources.

Didn't see your reply when I posted mine. I second your comment, Speedfan
didn't work at all for me in W2K.

Thanks Mike! I'll add it to my collection! :)

Very odd indeed. SpeedFan works almost everywhere. Do you mean that
SpeedFan didn't find your hard disk whereas another tool (not hardware
specific) did? Could you tell me which is your hardware and which is
the other tool? I would really appreciate as, to my knowledge, this
never happened before.
I'm the author of SpeedFan and you can send me an email. I'm sure you
can easily find it :-)
