Chris

I have set up a network with windows server 2003 on a new
server. The workstations (most upgraded) are all running
windowsxp.

The workstations are VERY slow to load (even the new ones)
when the password etc is entered. (All the profiles are
local).

Is there a setting(s) I can adjust to speed up the
loading process?

Once loaded the machines all run fine. (They all booted a
lot quicker on our old Novell network)

There could be a number of reasons for this but in my
recent experience with a similar problem I noticed that
the user had several very large .tmp files in his user
profile so when the machine tried to load his personal
settings it was taking forever. Once logged on everything
ran fine. I would check the user profile size.

Hope this helps.

The 2003 server should have DNS running on it. You
probably put the ISPs DNS numbers in. Try removing them
and put in the server's IP only. Also, remove the "."
(period) zone in the foeward lookup zones in DNS config.
As an alternative you can add the server in the LMHosts
file and preload it. Otherwise you are trying to resolve
your logon over the web. It can't find it so it finally
resolves it locally.
