I have S.M.A.R.T. enabled on both my Maxtor drives (resp. 40 and 80
Gb)

The program "acticeSmart" shows me the parameters.
Now for the 40 Gb drive it shows a temerature of 45 celsius, and for
the 80 Gb it shows 21 celsius (well below max. admissible 55, but...)
The drives are positioned flat, stacked, about 1 inch space between
them

I have a fan blowing along both, into the space too, rather directly.

Ambient temp. may be 27 celsius
I do not think the 80 Gb one has freon cooling inside ;-)
so why the difference ???

Btw: We have the severest heatwave in many many years. About everyone
here is pre-occupied with heat. Computers and old people have hughe
problems with it.
Friend had a disk dying on her...

Something's getting the temp of the second Maxtor wrong.

See what Everest has to say.

BTW, here is some SMART data from Everest, for both drives. The second

Yeah, looks like some stuffup on Maxtor's part with the temperature
sensor particularly, or its become disconnected internally or something.

Seeing what other Maxtor 6Y080P0 drives report
temperature wise should distinguish between those two.

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&c2coff=1&q=6Y080P0+"C2+Temperature"
http://groups.google.com.au/groups/search?hl=en&c2coff=1&q=6Y080P0+"C2+Temperature"
shows some much more plausible temps, so likely your sensor has
come off etc or its a dud firmware version thats manages to lose that.

Hard disk temperature can't be lower than ambient temperature! It does not
make sense... Something wrong with the sensor.

Exactly why I posted this question.

Manufacturers can vary in how (where, particularly) they
measure the temp, and what meaning they give to the temp.
If their goal is not to report the temp of the discrete
component measuring the temp but rather to approximate some
other temp, they may impose a numeric offset. For example
if the temp measured is 50C in a chip but they want to
report what they feel is the average, they might subtract
whatever their test shows should be the offset- maybe 5C
less, or maybe a different value.

When using an offset, it is typical that the further the
ambient temp and/or airflow gets from the environment used
to derive the offset value, the more inaccurate (if it ever
was to be considered accurate in the first place) the
resultant additive measured+offset temp will be.

That's if everything works right... which it doesn't always.

Best advice is to touch-test the chips on your hard drive
PCB, while your hands are dry (moisture (sweat) wiped off
immediately before doing it) and your other hand has
discharged static on a ground, like the drive frame or the
system case bare metal. If you can leave your finger on a
part for more than 4 seconds, it's probably cool enough (or
you have very thick callouses), though if it is easy enough
to add more cooling, better to err on the safe side.
