Thanks for your reply to these problems (at the end is a copy of the original thread). Neither one of the personal folders referenced can be closed: They're clones of each other. The only solution seems to be to un- and re-install Outlook.

THe problem with the contacts folder turned out to be an issue with the normal.dot file in Word 2003. This seems to be an issue that can crop up when using the Microsoft Outlook Backup com addin. I've talked with a couple of other users that had similiar problems after using the addin.

I hope that this information may be useful if anyone else uses Word as the default email editor. I just deleted the normal.dot and Word rebuilt it, of course, but a good build.

Again, thank you for your reply, it was much appreciated.

THe original thread:
1) R click > Close Personal Folder
2) Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing
directories or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the OAB in the
Directories and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select "Add
a new directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and add
the OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog
box, and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as you did
earlier. Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change
to make sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any
of them aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as
Outlook Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties,
clicking the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as
an E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making
these changes.

For whatever reason, after using the Oulook backup com addin, I've got two
Personal folders, eash with a contact list. When I try to search for a
contact, I get absolutely nothing. It's as if there were no contact folder
in existance.problems. It's just when I attempt to use it outside of the folder that
problems crop up.

Then you'll need to use the registry to remove the second Personal Folders
file (the one that is NOT your default). Then remove and re-add the Outlook
Address Book to your profile to reset it.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Outlook

Within the Outlook folder, there are a bunch of folders with long
hexadecimal values for names -- those are the ones you need to look in to
see if you can find the ghost .PST names. If you delete one of the keys and
it points to your real .PST file instead of one of the ghosts, it's not the
end of the world -- your data won't be gone. The worst you would have to do
is recreate your Outlook profile.

1) How can I remove the second personal folder?
2) How can I reconnect the contacts folder with the rest of Outlook?
