I was writing in microsoft word when suddenly a box
popped up saying something about "Runtime". I clicked
the "Cancel" incon in that box and all my writing
disappeared!

1, Can I retrieve it?

2, Can I cancel the option "runtime"? I want to be able
to have as long a document as I want with unlimited time
to compose it.

I have written in word before on this computer, and this
has never happened.

Thank you for any help you can give me. Manny

Certainly isn't normal Word behaviour. At a guess, either you have a Word
virus or you have a macro or add-in with some faulty code.

In computer jargon, a runtime error is something that happens when a program is running (as opposed to an error that won't let a program compile, or some other kind of error that occurs when programmers are building an application). It certainly doesn't mean that your use of Word is timed in any way.

I doubt that anything you did caused the error. You can probably consider it a freak occurrance and not worry about it. If it starts to happen frequently, you'll need to get to the root of the problem and fix it, but then you'll really need to pay attention to what the message says. The fix could be as simple as re-installing Word, but it's too soon to tell if you even need to do that.

It may be possible to recover your work. Word does save recovery info. But to be honest, it's been so long since Word has crashed on me (and I'm a technical writer who uses Word every day to produce full-length books, reports, brochures, and the like) that I really don't remember what the recovered files look like.
HTH!
