Runtime Error

Greetings!
I have installed Vista in the last week. It was a clean install, not an
upgrade install. A game program, Pretty Good Solitaire, worked fine on XP2.
I have done a clean install of that program, using the version that they
claim is OK for Vista. Now, most everytime I try to change the Options in
the program I get a "runtime error 91" and upon clicking "OK" the program
closes. I have been unsuccessful in a week of searching online for answers
to come up with a solution to this. Lest you wonder: I have been in touch
with the game company twice. They essentially scratched their heads and
replie, "Gee, this beats me!" You folks are a last resort before I just
surrender and dump the program altogether. I hope that you're able to help
as this is really a good program -- when it works!
Thanks much!

Hi,

Either the game files are corrupt, or they are attempting to write to the
program folder. Try this: Right click the icon to launch the program, choose
'run as administrator'. See if you can make the adjustments now without the
errors. If you can, then the latter of the two causes is the problem, and
until they rewrite the program for virtualization it will continue to be. If
you get the errors still, then the install files are problem corrupt.
Possibly uninstalling it and reinstalling may correct it.

Thanks much! Running as administrator seems to have fixed the problem.
I'll have to watch it to see if it recurs. In the meantime, can you
give a quick answer as to why "running as administrator" fixed this?
Also, would it, therefore, make sense to run all of my apps. as
administrator?
Thanks again!

Hi,

It works because the program is not written properly for Vista and is trying
to write to the program folder rather than the virtual environment that the
user profile creates for it. Programs should not be run this way except for
as a workaround until the application distributor fixes it with either a
code patch or update to the program.

Interesting! Perhaps I should pass your thoughts along to the company
(it's a small, 2-person operation). They may not be aware of this.
Thanks much!
