When I attempt to use "My Pictures" I get a runtime error
notice from explorer.exe. Do I have too many pictures in
the file? What's the deal?
thanks for any help.

i solved my problem by deleting the thumbnail data base. It must have become corrupted. Deleting it forced windows to recreate the thumbnails. No problem now.

Way-to-go!

What exactly did you delete?

I deleted the file "thumbs.db" in My Pictures. This forced (I think) Windows to recompose the file and it is A-OK now. I think that someone else in this newsgroup had been advised to do the same thing for another problem and I thought--why not? I haven't a clue why it became corrupted in the first place.

Still, My Pictures is very slow--comparatively--to load (and I have a gig of RAM), whereas programs like ThumbsPlus (by Cerious Software) which also allows one to view thumbnails of picture files is much faster. On the other hand, it is harder to print files from that program.

Thanks!

Oh...OK, you can prevent those files
if you open a folder and go to...
Tools / Folder Options / View tab...
Place a check in the box...
"Do Not Cache Thumbnails"
Apply / OK.

The free PowerToy TweakUI has
an option to lower the quality of thumbnails
and also reduce their size. I find that mine
open much quicker after making these
adjustments.

Windows XP PowerToys / free download

Running DiskCleanup, Error Checking
and Defrag on a regular schedule can
help also.
