I keep getting a runtime error message,
stating "application require the runtime to terminate in
an unusual way. contact the support team."

what can be done to fix this?

Runtime Library Microsoft Visual C++, Runtime Error Program
C:\Windows\Explorer.exe or Iexplore.exe, abnormal program termination.

also make sure you don't have both the Sun JRE and the Microsoft VM JIT
compiler enabled.
