Running Win98 from a DVD-RW

Eric

I really don't feel like chiseling off a piece of my hard drive for a third
OS, but would like to be able to play a few games that won't run under
WinXP.

Using a DVD-RW disc for a Win98 environment would be an excellent solution.
Not sure exactly how to go about it though. Perhaps use some program that
makes the DVD appear as a "virtual HD" in order to trick Win98 to be able to
install to it (run Win98 setup from WinXP) and then set to BIOS to attempt
to boot from the CD/DVD drive first? I'm thinking simply using a boot
loader (Lilo, Boot Magic, etc) wouldn't work because after powering up the
system wouldn't have the "virtual HD" software running.

Anyone done this before?

Other option I'm considering is to just buy an external hard drive and use
that for Win98 (or whatever else need be).

Why is it you're trying to run Win98? If it is because some older programs
aren't running or installing for you, take a look in Help and Support for
Compatibility Mode. More information is also here in a TechNet article:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/techinfo/administration/legacyapps/
If you're really determined to run multiple operating systems, you can look
into Virtual PC, http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/ Really is a
slick operation, but you need to have the basic memory already onboard to be
able to share it out.

+ "Compatibility Modes" don't work for games that have problems in WinXP.

+ Virtual PC: Attempt to play 3D games inside Win98 inside WinXP? No
thanks!

build a pe disk, you can have it load the drives and such like and 98
shouldn't need a dvd for all the files. run a search on pe disks and you
should find something for 98, I have one for xp and its on a cd-r.
