Hi all, the subject says it:
i want to run windows2000 on an old machine;
how do i do the following:
1) decide which updates i need?
2) find said updates?

It just occured to me that there must be 5 years of updates to get;
is that right? or can i be selective about which ones i get?
if so, what criteria for selection?

thx for any help,
mijofitz

No to selective, you need them all. To do a clean install, either boot the
Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks
can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk
directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe
(from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply at least these two to your new install before connecting to
any network.

First off... though you certainly can use Win2k on an older machine...
(even a p-1 133mhz with 64 megs of RAM)
I would not do so unless you have at least a 350 -400 mhz cpu and 128 megs
of RAM...
though if at all possible , try to get the memory up to 256 megs...
(If you have a nice 7200rpm HD you may be able to get by ok with 128 megs of
ram)

as soon as you get it installed...*immediately* hit the start button and go
to "windows update"
and apply *all* updates.
Though Win2k is still a decent enough OS...
without the updates it's *very* insecure.

step 2 is to get a virus checker...
(i use the free version of AVG)

Dave basically says install W2K from the CD and then before
connecting to the internet also install SP4 and the post-SP4
rollup.

I would go a little further: after all of the above, I prefer to
also install a firewall/AV package before plugging in that
network cable. And then after that, don't go anywhere on the net
until after you have checked both MicroSoft and the manufacturer
of your security software for additional security updates.

thx to all who responded;
got it running and have loaded the security pack 4 successfully,
along with AVG, firewall (zone alarm) and things seem to be rocking
along nicely!
thx again,
regs,
michael
