Running SFC without a disc

On a Satellite p105 laptop with Windows Media SP3, I attempted to run SFC and it found
a lot of files it wanted me to reinstall/replace or whatever, but it prompts me to
insert my SP3 Windows CD, which I've never had. I just have an OEM picture CD that
would put the system back 2 years to purchase date. Aren't the necessary system files
usually stored as CAB file somewhere deep below? How would I direct SFC to point to
them rather than a disc, and where might I find the right files? ... or is that possible?
Thanks
Tim

Look for a Folder called I386 it must be around 533 megs, as you might find
smaller ones that some Applications install.

So much for preinstalled software....It might be possible to run Sfc w/o the
retail xp cd,but you'd have to redirect xps search for the files from cdrom
to
other area (hd partition, etc),this redirection would be in regedit.Expand
Local_Machine,software,microsoft,windows,open set-up,edit or add to the 2
cdrom
texts listed, this is where xp is going to look when the cmd is given.

Tim, I have noticed that on the xp media edition that you will be
prompted to insert cd to install/replace files but I believe that this
is normal and does not indicate repairs are needed. I'm pretty sure I
have seen a microsoft knowledgebase regarding this. I know that I
personally have gone thru the sfc process and then ran it again
afterwards only to find out it prompted me again. This is on several
different machines all runing media edition 2005.

Maybe you can tell us why you thought running it was necessary. Were
there certain issues you were trying to resolve?

Ok, here; I looked up the knowledgebase http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909059
i didnt read all the way thru but i think this is the issue your
having. follow this link. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909059
