Running programs

When installing a new program, it ask to stop running all
open programs. How do you know what is running in the
background and how do you close?
 
With Windows XP, you just need to close any programs that you may have
opened, or were minimized to the tray. It's not like Windows 9x/Me where
you would need to pretty much close every running process.
