Hansome

I just finished a clean install of XP Pro as soon as my
Service Pack 2 CD from MS came in the mail. However,
checking the Running Processes tab revealed 5 instances
of the file svchost.exe. WHY? The Application Details
windows simply states that it is a known process but, not
why its running 5 times. Any help in enlighting me would
be welcomed. TIA

This is normal.

If you run Task manager, either via run taskmgr.exe or ctrl-alt-delete, and
look at the processes tab, and sort it by name, you will see that some of
these processes run in different security contexts--local, system, network.

Each of the five processes aggregates different services under it (or in
some cases, perhaps the same service under a different security context.)

Bill:

Thank you for the quick response.
