i have vista home premeium and it is very fast and runs great. my problem is
after a while i cant do anything. for example. i usually have about 4 IE
windows open and photoshop or dreamweaver open, i am a web designer. and
after a wile no windows will open, or photoshop wont work. In dreamweaver
iw ill get a low memory error. sometimes if i just close one window i can
open another. but this is not acceptable. if i restart then i
everything will be fine. but it keeps happening. every once in a
while i will get the blue screen that sais memory dump or something.

what is going on?

thanks

Lisa

What are your system specs?
if you have less than 512 or exactly 512 mb of RAM, you have the bare
minimum for Vista. Basic runs well on 1gb, but best on 2gb, as with any
application.

Hi,

So obviously you shouldn't be running out of memory. Some possible causes:

- You have artificially limited/constrained virtual memory. This could be
because you placed a cap on the pagefile size, or that you are running out
of disk space and it cannot expand appropriately.
- Your antivirus software is interfering with the virtual memory process.
- A program you have installed is not fully Vista-compatible and is not
releasing memory as it should be.
- Spyware/virus/malicious plugin raising havoc on the system.

i wasnt sure if it was a memory problem but i didnt know exaclty what it was.

How do i change the page file?

i cant be running out of disk space, this is a new computer with 2- 250g
drives

my virus software is AGV free edition

my programs are vista compatible

Thanks

Hi,

Some artificially alter the pagefile size from the advanced system settings,
and in general you'd know if you did that. See if running everything without
one of the design program changes anything. I suspect it's one of them, as
they are fairly memory intensive.

I know i havent changed the page file, but should i? It does only
happen when i have quite a bit running. mabey im just overloading it. I
know the graphics programs are large. I ran my virus last night and
that was clear. im sure your right, ill just try to watch what i have
open at once.

Thanks alot and i appreciate your time

Does the programme you are using when the problem arises have an
undo feature. Programmes having Undo can have extremely large
memory requirements. If yes look for a way to manage the issue. Saving
the file at intervals may help.

ahhh, that i neve would have thought of. yes, photoshop and dreamweaver ,
flash, etc, all have undo features. so as i am working, untill i save
it , the computer "holds it" so to speak, saving it would "release" that
memory? that i totaly understand tying up my system,

thanks alot, i will save alot more often, i save frequelty anyway, but i
will save even more frequently and see if that helps

thanks alot

The only program we have in common is Photoshop. In Photoshop, have you tried
File > Preferences > Plug Ins and Scratch Disks and making adjustments, also
Preferences > Memory and Image Cache and making adjustments. Your other programs
may also have similar adjustments.

what adjustmenst should i make to the scratch disks in photohsop.
dreamweaver and fireworks dont have any setting like that

Thanks
Lisa

I moved my scratch disks to other partitions that have a lots of free space and
will probably have for a long time. Memory and Image cache by default is set to
50% of your free memory. Search Photoshop's Help for suggestions. I have 4GB,
so I left it alone. You may want to use less. Look in the Tools menus of your
other programs for similar adjustments and use their Help and search for memory
to see in there are any adjustments and recommendations.

Yes, move all four options to your other disk.
How about the Memory and Image cache setting?

the cache level is 6

avaiable RAM 1725

maximum used by photoshop =55% =949 mb

these are the settings for the memory and image cache

You will probably have to experiment and decide according to your experiences.
Any suggestions in Photoshop's Help? Any suggestions in your other program's
Help?

i turned down the max value and put all 4 scratch files on my other hard
drive. so far so good. i havent checked the help files yet. but i will
and ill let you know

thanks alot

Lisa,

Please let us know if any of these suggestions have helped.

Also, although it might be useless in this situation, Vista has a new feature
Problem Reports and Solutions in Control Panel that can sometimes give a clue as
to what causes problems. Click Check for new solutions, and after it checks,
click View problem history, right click on the problem and select View problem
details. There is a link to copy the problem to the clipboard. Past that into
a message and post to the appropriate Vista newsgroup. The fault ID bucket
number can sometimes lead to a solution to your problem.
