PC flunky
I bought this PC 2 weeks ago. It is an HP a6300f tower and a HP W2007 wide
screen monitor. It had Vista home premium, a 60 day trial of Norton Internet
Security 2008and other software trial offers. I signed up for the 60 day
trial of Norton as my first thing done on the PC. Norton seemed to setup
sucessfully- it defaulted to the Wndows firewall and set up its product for
everything else. From the very beginning I got notification from Windows to
get HP updates for the W2007 monitor. There were 4 updates expected to take
less than 10 minutes to install. I let it run for more than an hour before I
cancelled the update. I've forgotten what the exact error was. A while
later Windows informed me an update was ready to be run. The update turned
out to be for the W2007 monitor. Windows failed to load the update. It said
it found the driver but there was an error and it could not run it- to
contact the manufacturer. Eventually I was sucessfull with HP support
help to load the drivers manually. Ater loading 4 updates and restarting
for each update I thought everything was fine. The next time I started the PC
Windows told me there were updates ready to install- the updates were the
same W2007 monitor updates. When I let Windows try to install the updates
once again it failed. This has beeen going on with each time me trying
various different little ways to try and get it to load. Finally today I got
windows to try and install it. This time it tried to run the update and said
it failed- the reason the update is not needed!!! This has happened 2 or 3
more times today. Anybody know why and how I can get Windows to stop telling
me this update is required? Two days ago I got notification from widows that
a Vista Service Pack1 update should be run. It took about 2 hours to
download and install. I had set Norton to do a full scan every day at 7:00PM
The day I install SP1 I noticed when I came back to use the PC at 9:00PM
there was no indication that Norton antivirus had run. I thought that was a
little strange but knowing diddly squat about PCs I let it go. The next
morning I logged on to the PC did a few things and decided to have Norton run
a full scan while I went out. I double clicked the Norton icon on the desktop
- nothing happened. Tried a coupla more times still nothing happened. I
went to start, programs and clicked on Norton this brought up about 4
subscreens. I tried them all absolutely nothing from any of them. I went
back to the welcome popup screen and clicked on security settings to my
surprise there was no Norton available. It appears Windows SP1 overrode all
Norton and put itself as the only security software. I was shocked. How
could Windows make that decision without asking if I wanted it done?? At the
time I thought maybe that's not so bad only one security software to worry
about- maybe now my updates will work cause I expected maybe norton was
blocking the updates. That turned out to not be the case. Microsoft updates
as always have worked. However all non-microsoft updates all seem to
download sucessfully but when it tries to install them it always fails. Can
anybody tell me how to get these non-microsoft updates to install?
