Running McAfee as a "limited" user

I have McAfee Virusscan 10 installed on my Windows XP SP2 PC. I prefer to
use my computer day to day under a "limited" user account rather than an
"administrator." The problem is that McAfee can't seem to install
downloaded updates or remove or quarantine viruses under a limited account.
Am I doing something wrong? If not, is there a workaround for this problem?

If it was installed by an admin user, it ought always to run
with admin rights, whoever happens to be logged in. The
enterprise version does, anyway.

The enterprise version uses NT Service and the "Local Systems Account". I don't know if v10
does it this way.

Sorry the general opinion of the posters and mods at the mcafee forums is no
you cannot update dats when logged on as a limited user.

They feel the "fix" of setting the permissions for limited user as follows

http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=143741#143741

will not work though worth a try. I have posted a query for our tech there
to see what he says and to suggest this fixed for the next version.

Thanx for that informatioon Tony.

I have not seen that product.
Is it like the retail v8 and v9 products in the way it depends on IE ?
Additionally does retail VirusScan v10 use NT Services ?
Finally, does the Mcfee SuperDAT recognize the retail VirusScan v10 product ?

Mcafee superdat does not recognise VS10 you can use the dat zipped dat files
and manually add the dats into the relevant folder.

Vs10 depends on IE though with plugins other browsers might work as well. I
think one of our mods uses mozilla to update

Re services nt I will check

That's a bit shit then!

The reason I ask is that if the unknowns are determined, it could be scripted and the script
could perform the updates. Using the Scheduled Tasks to perform an update, an
Administrative User Account and Password can be applied to this scheduled task job.

I ask about the NT Service because the NT Service would have to be stopped to replace the
DAT files and if it doesn't use a NT service it would have to be done programmatically.

Totally !!!

1 Is vs10 like the retail v8 and v9 products in the way it depends on
IE ?

It is dependent on an ActiveX enabled browser.

2. Does it use NT services

No

Then I can't see scripting the update process and thus bypassing the limited user problem.

The retail McAfee versions /*suck*/ compared to their corporate counterparts !

Thanx Tony.
