I need some help in trimming what applications are running in memory. Over
the years, the list has grown and now causes the PC to run much slower.

I do not know what is the basic list of applications except for a few
(explorer.exe, system.exe, etc.).

Please advise.

Well your request is very diffcult. reaosn is because we
have no idea what is running in taskmgr. Also you woudl
have to tell us what programs are installed and running
when you look @ the taskmgr. but if you are feeling
brave.. You can start closing them 1 at a time and see
what happens. but windows will NOT allow you to close
process ( thats what they are called in taskmgr) that are
needed to run by windows. Once you have stopped them you
can see what it closed. then you can remove them from the
startmenu or the registry.

Here is a basic list of process that start with windows:

Taskmgr.exe
SMSS.exe
CSRSS.exe
Winlogon.exe
Services.exe
svchost.exe ( there coudl be lots of this one )
spoolssv.exe
Iexplorer.exe ( internet explorer )
Itbiossvc.exe
explorer.exe
regsvc.exe
mstask.exe
Winmgmt.exe

The only one there you can close is the iexplorer.exe.

hope this helps
