Running Excel causes Video Adapter to run in default

My default mode is a very ugly thing to see. It makes my
excel spreadsheets about 10 times larger on the screen
than I originally created them. Did I cause some sort of
exe or xls file to be not able to run. How can I correct
it without doing a System restore.

You've given very little information about what might have happened to
create this effect.

Why the trepidation about using System Restore?

It only affects executables--it won't alter any user data files.
