Hello, I have what I hope is a simple question:

I have a problem on my with my system disk having some
corrupted files. A message pops up whenever I restart
the computer about running a disk check. However, if I
let it go, the computer seems to toggle between Windows
trying to come up and the disk check screen - with no
running of the program.

I tried running the chkdsk program from the "Start/Run"
menu with the command "chkdsk". It runs, but tells me
that - because I have omitted the "F" option - it is
running read-only mode.

How do I get Chkdsk to run with the correct options?

Thanks in advance...

I have recently had a similar problem. What I do is type cmd in run box.
It will bring up a command prompt. After the command prompt type chkdsk c:
/f /r and hit return.

Since this is your system disk, chkdsk will not be able to run while the
disk is in use. It will ask you if you want to schedule chkdsk Y/N and you
should check Y and return. Then type exit at the command prompt and reboot
your computer.

If you want to do this quicker, you can run chkdsk c: /f without the /r, but
I would reccomend using the /r at least once. Hope this helps.

Gerry,

I ran the chkdsk program last night successfully, thanks
to your suggestions. I especially found the 2nd white
paper helpful in explaining what the chkdsk program does,
even the I used the straight-forward instructions found
in your 1st reference to actually perform chkdsk.

Thanks very much and have a very Happy New Year!
