Running BOTH Word 07 and Word 03

I have Word 03 on one of my computers. If I install Word 07, will Word 03
still be available for use -- so I can use 07 and my wife use 03? Are any
special procedures or precautions necessary to achieve this?

You can certainly do that - but why? Why not both use the same version?
 
You can do this; just be sure to install Word 2007 side-by-side rather than
as an upgrade install. This means you'll have to read and choose options
carefully when you install. If you're installing all of Office 2007, note
that you can have only one version of Outlook installed, so you'll have to
choose between 2003 and 2007.

About why: some people like to stick with what they know and see no
benefit to learning something new if the current product/software serves the
uses their need.

Although I haven't upgraded to 2007 myself, I have experienced upgrade and
new install pain. I assume that 2007 may use some the same folders,
filenames, and /or the same files for many of the supporting files.
<filename>.dll.

Even if you are careful, some 2003 functions may not work after the 2007
install, because <filename>.dll for 2003 was in version 4.5, and
<filename>.dll for 2007 is in version 6.5. Word (Office 2003) will not be
able to understand version 6.5.

You might have better luck if your hard drive is partitioned into different
bootable partitions. You could then install 2007 to a separate partition
leaving the original bootable partition alone. Alternately, if word 2007 is
installed to hard drive d while word 2003 is left on drive c, could also
mitigate some issues. None of these solutions is 100%. Before doing your
upgrade, do a full backup.

Also, be prepared to teach your spouse 2007, or to learn to love 2003.
 
Actually the two will work quite happily together - even on screen at the
same time, and there are some advantages to be gained from having both - at
least in the near term.

The only issue I have found in practice concerns the numbering of new
documents when both are open - though even that is inconsequential.

Either will use Outlook 2003 or 2007, but there is no way you can have both
Outlook versions. It took all of five minutes testing on a spare machine to
realise that Outlook 2007 was worth the upgrade. Using both Word versions is

Thats great to know. My employer won't get around to upgrading for some time,
several hundred workstations, so I thought I was locked into keeping 2003 at
home to insure compatability.
 
I read your page on how nice both run together but your page shows how to
update and change the registry using XP not Vista. Also when I installed 2007
the only selections available are update or update customize which allowed be
to save all 2003 applications except outlook. I guess what I am looking for
is a simple step by step process that concludes with 2 icons on my desktop. 1
opens 07 and one opens 03, furthermore when I open a word doc created and
saved in 03 it would be nice if it opened in 03 vice 07; however I would be
satisfied with using open doc if I had too. Can this be done
