Hi

I've got a Personal Laserwriter NT and I'm trying to run it with
windows Xp through the 9 pin serial port. I've made a serial cable
which has only three connections, pin 1-1, 2-3, and 3-2. I've
installed the Windows XP driver for the Laserwriter NT v5.18. I've set
the com port to the correct parity etc. It still refuses to work. THe
printer only ever prints out a page when i turn it on. I can't tell
which com port is the 9-pin serial port, so maybe i've set it to the
wrong one (even though i've tried all). Anyone got any troubleshooting
ideas?

Cheers
dave

Look at the startup page which you are getting. It will tell you the
"Communication Protocol": RS-232 serial (what you want) or AppleTalk
(the default). You can change this with DIP switches.

See <http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~alanb/lwIInt.html>
and <http://www.peanuts.org/faq-serve/cache/261.html>
for the switches and
<http://www.tokyopc.org/newsletter/1996/07/Cables.html> for cables.

To check your PC serial port, borrow some serial device, such as a
modem or maybe an old mouse (serial mice used to come with an port
adapter to fit on 9 or 15 pin ports), and see if you can get it to
respond.

A quick Google search (a useful trick, incidentally) located this:
