Running 512+mb RAM

I find that running Windows XP on 512mb RAM is fine.
However when I boost the RAM to 768mb the system becomes
unstable and freezes in Internet Explorer as well as
displaying blue screens sometimes. I have tried
increasing the RAM voltage but this doesn't seem to help.
Anyone got any ideas how to solve this?

As Windows XP can handle 4GBs, this isn't a Windows issue. I'm currently
running 1GB without issue. Sounds to me like the 256MB you added is faulty.

Hello

Another thing to try is make sure that your using
the same memory as you ahev installed like same
speed ok, give that a try or like the last guy said
you could have some bad memory, currently am running
XP Pro with 1gb ram and no problems

SOME times one ram will be more stable than two or more
rams . it seemed that your two or more RAMS cannot work
tegether.they are not copatible.

I've got 3 256mb sticks, all generic, of which I've tried
all different combinations of 2 in the system. That works
fine, it's just when RAM is in the 3rd slot there's a
problem. I don't think the RAM's the problem, maybe the
3rd slot has a problem? Any other thoughts?

It's possible the third slot has issues. There were also some motherboard a
while back that had issues when all the ram slots were filled, but worked
fine with any 2. Can't remember which mobo that was in particular, though.

Are you sure your motherboard supports 768 megs of ram?

Some don't, so you should check to make sure.

many motherboards run into signalling issues with 3
dimms. ram is run in a serial configuration...more dimms
at high speed cause issues. some boards run memory in
parallel (dual channel), but you would know if yours did,
those are high end systems, generally not sold at retail.

try going into the bios and changing the memory timings to
the highest possible numbers.

Its a Soltek SL-75KV Socket A Motherboard. It supports up
to 1.5gb SDRAM 168pin, which suggests 3 x 512mb sticks.
So running 3 x 256mb sticks shouldn't cause a problem but
it does.

If the RAM is OK, then have you checked whether your motherboard can support
that much RAM? I had a 1998 Gateway that could only handle 384 Meg. Newer
PCs have larger limits, but not infinite. Also, I have heard of some
motherboards that have limits on how the memory slots are used, singly or in
pairs. Read your motherboard manual or go to the motherboard (or PC)
maker's support website and look for such limits, or maybe just download a
manual.

I get the same problem too. My motherboard can take up to
2GB of RAM. It runs perfectly with 256MB but i added a
768, it freezes in IE and shows me the BSOD when i click
Tools. Microsoft suggest this: 322205.(search this)

Is it possible that with the third slot (or 3 chips) the timing (CAS
?) needs to be slowed does just a little ? I suggest posting your
problem, with the motherboard model and as muct as you know about your
memory chips to a hardware discussion group.

I've got a Dual-Xeon board with 6GB of DDR, will XP pro support and utilize all of it, or am I going to have to plunk down hard-earned dollars for server 2003? Currently running 2000 Pro with no problems.
