I have looked up rundll32 errors and have seen lots of different versions but
not the one i am having. Any help would be appreciated!
I see this error in 2 different situations
1) When in windows explorer and looking at or even opening folders that
contain movies. I did download itunes - I think it started happening after
that.
2) When trying to attach a file to an email when the email is via browser, I
allow the process and get the rundll32 error.

Window's doesn't shut down and in the first case if I hit the x on top the
explorer doesn't even close. I was living with this issue until I couldn't
send out pictures of my cute 2 year old - now I have issues!!!

Thanks again for anyone's help.

I've seen posts here which describe other kind of problems caused by
iTunes -- not your problem, but still important problems -- so iTunes
could indeed be the cause.

It's at least worth a try to uninstall iTunes to see if it helps.

Hi,

Rundll32.exe is a file that executes instructions in a library file
(normally a .dll file). The problem isn't with rundll32, it's with the
library file being accessed. Either it's corrupt, missing, or the
instructions are erroneous for this operating system. Can you post the full
version of the error message? If I had to guess, I'd say you likely have
some spyware or misbehaving activex control if it doesn't turn out to be the
Itunes software (which, as you already suspect, may very well be the root of
the problem - have you tried uninstalling it?)

I sympathize. I had a ton of rundll32 errors when I first upgraded to Vista.

Be sure and check out the messages in "Event Viewer". You can find this
program by typing it in the search box above the start button.

Check for the message when the error happened. It should tell you what
specific file is causing the error message. Sometimes the error goes away
when you simply rename the file. Stick a "1" in front of it, for example.

Good luck!

Thank you all for your replies. I did a few things and now it's worse...
1) I removed I tunes and restarted - no help there... maybe it's an apple I
should be going with...
2) checked the event viewer - would you believe this isn't coming up as an
error? what are these people thinking - i can't send pic's of my kids - that
is an ERROR. I found the informational events for APPCRASH (that isn't an
ERROR??), it's event ID 1001. When I click on the link it brings me to the
microsoft site and the fix for this issue shows all of the products that this
relates to - none say VISTA.
3) I reporduced the error so I could copy it here, there is no data on the
error but there is a new feature of VISTA - when a problem occurs a pop up
window comes up with a solution or where to get it.
The first pop up says this:
Follow these steps to solve the problem with lmpgspl.ax (Follow the steps in
the article to unregister this binary, e.g. regsvr32 /u lmpgspl.ax)

This problem was caused by lmpgspl.ax (Follow the steps in the article to
unregister this binary, e.g. regsvr32 /u lmpgspl.ax). lmpgspl.ax (Follow the
steps in the article to unregister this binary, e.g. regsvr32 /u lmpgspl.ax)
was created by Ligos Corporation.

A solution is available that will solve this problem.

This file 'lmpgspl.ax' is not found on my system. I click on the link in
this document and get a web page that says: I need to register and
unregister "Wuv3is.dll ".
Again errors occur when I try to do that. The url for this useless and
unrelated fix is: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249873

Again I looked at the products this fixes and nowhere do i see VISTA.
I'm SOOO frustrated - at this point I cannot use window's explorer without
it crashing in 1 minute or less...

Thanks for listening - any more direction is greatly appreciated. You can
also email me directly at (e-mail address removed)

I just went through this for a client. The errors occur because the
Ligos codecs installed aren't really Vista-compatible. I don't believe
it has anything to do with iTunes.

There are a couple of different fixes for this depending on what you
have installed on your system.

1. If you have Nero, update to the very latest version.

2. Unregistering the Ligos codecs (lmpgspl.ax, etc.). To do this, click
on the Start Orb and type "cmd.exe". Then right-click on Cmd and choose
Run As Administrator. You will see the cmd prompt. At the prompt, type:

regsvr32 /u lmpgsl.ax [enter]

You'll get a confirmation box saying the unregistration was successful.
Do this for every codec for which you get the error. My client's box had
about 4 of these codecs. She didn't have Wu3is.dll.

3. If after the unregistering you get an error that the codec can't be
found, log into an account with administrative privileges (you should
create at least one extra account like this for emergencies). Go to
Control Panel>Folder Options>View. Set the options to see all hidden
files. You'll get several *.ini files on the Desktop - ignore them
because you aren't going to use this account for anything but
emergencies - or you can go back to Folder Options and hide the
protected files when you're done.

Now go to C:\Windows\System32 and find the .dll for which you got the
error. Right-click on it and Rename to (ex.) lmpgsl.ax.bak. Log off and
go back to your regular account and see if you can play the movie file
by double-clicking on it now. You should not get the error any more.

Malke - thank you for your response, I don't have nero so I started with your
second suggestion. I am in cmd.exe as administrator and tried to run regsvr32
/u lmpgsl.ax and got an error.
The moudle "lmpgsl.ax" failed to load.
Made sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check
for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files.
The specified module could not be found.

Should i be in a different path in the cmd window? I am currently in the
default c:\windows\system32>
Thanks

No, you should do what I told you to do if you got a fail message (Item
3. in my previous message).

Malke

You have to be in same folder as the file. Or

regsvr32 /u c:\somefolder\anotherfolder\filename.ext

You can copy the path to a file by Shift + Right Clicking it then choose
Copy As path. Then right click taskbar in Cmd, Edit, Paste.

Hi Malke,

Thanks a million for your patient replies on this issue as I was facing
exactly the same problem. Seems that you will have to be very careful with
the ActiveX handling especially in Vista.
My DVD player is now accessible again after I have renamed the related
Imp*.ax files.
Thanks again!

You're welcome, Joerg. While you always have to be careful with ActiveX,
I expect you really meant DirectX or even DivX. :-)

The issue seems to be caused by codecs that aren't quite
Vista-compatible. We'll be running into these little glitches for a
while yet, just like we did with various things when XP first came out.
It will all settle down eventually. :-)

Same her - the message pops up everytime I open an video file.

Could someone please, please tell me in very simple steps how to fix this?
The Microsoft pop-up 'help' is written in geekish and therefore is no help at
all.

I tried the cmd bit but it says regsvr32 /u lmpgspl.ax isn't on my computer
- how can something that's not there casue a problem??

I expected more fromMircosoft / vista to be frank

Hi,

What are you doing when this crash occurs? The application, rundll32.exe, is
a generic process that loads routines from 32-bit library (.dll) files. The
problem is unlikely to be with the process, but rather with the program
making the call to load a routine. We'd need to know what application was
calling for what file when this happens.
