I am running windows 2000 on a laptop and have been experiencing
constant O/S hangs and errors resulting in rundll32.exe to stop
fuctioning. One example of how it hangs up the system is if i go to
the internet properties window and select another tab it stops
responding however not using any system resources there is nothing of
value in the event log. After the crash i can even open up the control
panels.

I am able to perform every function that fails in safe mode. so i
began clearing out my startup and running processes. I have done a
chkdsk /r from the recovery console, with the same result. i've
basically turned off everything and it results in the same crashing.

Anyone have any ideas?

unfortunately Spyware came up clean and the virus scan (based off
updates from our EPolicy server) won't pick up the newest definitions
because it crashes while attempting to update using the Epol Agent. I
havent ruled out the possibility of a virus. and whenever i attempt to
connect to a network share it crashes again. I tried running an
upgrade install of windows XP but it hangs up as well. I am trying my
hardest to not lose any data that is on the laptop.

I don't have any additional suggestions right now but DON'T try to
upgrade a defective operating system or if you suspect you have virus!
Trying to upgrade to get rid of existing problems is an almost sure
recipe for disaster. Can you do an online virus scan from Symantec or
McAffee, for example? You say there are no events logged for any of
these crashes?

It wont let me access anything online, this is exactly how i discovered
the problem began. upon checking the event log again I only have a
jsdaemon error, there is nothing in any log in reference to
rundll32.exe crashing. I figured out that i can access the shares on
the HDD from another pc but am unable to access anything

However, i ran another chkdsk /r just to see if it would show errors
repaired and it did fix something. Now i went back in and tried to
access the internet options window. the only tab i am unable to access
is the connection's tab. I can also actualyl go to that tab while in
safe mode.

The problem is not with rundll32, it's with something else that is using
rundll32. You can't turn rundll32 off, almost nothing on the pc will
run if you do so. rundll32 is just a process that handles dll files for
your programs, it is rarely at fault when you get error messages about
it. Usually it's malware or misbehaved software that is the problem, in
this case I think the culprit is jsdaemon. See here and do further
searches on the internet for more information:
