...... if it works don't mend it ....
My magazine suggested using MS Update,
on Custom setting.
So I downloaded 6 updates ... woe is me.
I run XP on 'Classic' start up setting.
I now find that I have to select a User
setting as Administrator to start up.
If I use Control Panel 'User Accounts'
and untick the welcome screen ...
I find that the Shut Down/Restart/Cancel
icons have changed to a different
dialogue screen.
Please.
How can I remove the start up user screen,
and still retain the usual shut down icons.
.... Its agony being a newbie ...

Go back to Windows update and install the update for .Net 1.1 if it offers
it.

You should not be using the built in Administrator account for day to day
activities. This account should be set aside and used only if something
corrupts the working account. If you use the built in Administrator account
and don't have any other accounts on the system and something corrupts this
account you're locked out.

From the Users applet in control panel create another account with admin
level privileges. Then log in in to this account at least once. When you
do so, the Administrator account will no longer appear on the Welcome screen
for login. To login to it, for XP Pro at the welcome screen do ctrl-alt-del
twice to bring up the login dialog box, type Administrator as the user and
then the password.

For XP Home boot into safe mode and Administrator will appear on the welcome
screen.

Once the new account is created copy the data and settings from
Administrator to is using the link I have listed below.

I don't recommend you set up the system to auto login to an account. This
is a security issue. But if you want to:

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To
Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

......................WHEW !!! .....I'M Impressed ....................
As suggested, obtained and installed Framework .NET 1.1 Service Pack 1.
Rebooted, still open with Administrator Welcome Screen.
Feel inadequate to carry out your 'Run' instructions, so went for Tweakui.
Here you see why I'm a 'Newbie'. I see 15 different tweakui downloads
on the web page you indicated. Which one do I need ... Please.
I have the following .NET programs. One is used by a substitute PAINT.
MS .NET Framework 1.0.3705
..NET 1.0 Hotfix (KB886906)
..NET 1.1
..NET 2.0
Security Update .NET 2 KB 917283 and KB922770
