My husband and I are networked on our computers, I am the main one.
Yesterday I sent him a file using windows explorer and since then he has been
unable to access Internet Explorer (his browser is MSN). A box states: Run
time error! prog: C:\Program files\Internet Explorer\EXPLORE.EXE It
further states: This application has requested the runtime to terminate it
in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more
information. On my computer I have searched for the answers in the KB but
found nothing to help me. We are both pensioners so if you can help would
appreciate it and of course we are not very technically minded. Thank you

Runtime Library Microsoft Visual C++, Runtime Error Program
C:\Windows\Explorer.exe or Iexplore.exe, abnormal program termination.

also make sure you don't have both the Sun JRE and the Microsoft VM JIT
compiler enabled.
If none of that helps, try uninstalling the Google toolbar.

Hello Frank, thank you so much for your reply, but I cannot access the
Internet from my husbands computer so can not go on to the links you
supplied, he cannot get on to the MSN page, which is his home page browser so
cannot adjust the google bar! I can access from my computer so will indeed
look at the sites but if I have to download a 'tool' or such like then I can
only download to mine. So my problem still exists, but thank you so much
for the courtesy of your reply, it is really appreciated.

Hi again Frank, can you tell me what the Sun JRE and the Microsoft VM JIT
compilers are please, because we have absolutely no idea. As I mentioned we
are pensioners so have come late to computers!!! Thank you so much.

Hi Frank,

I have looked at the recommended sites which would seem that you feel my
husband may have a virus of some sort. I will run Norton etc., he has
Service Pack2 which I believed had added protection, and there has been no
signs of a virus to date. Is there any other cause for this run time error
or must it definitely be a virus? I forgot to mention that he can send and
receive emails so is definitely able to get on line, he just cannot access
the Internet, weird or what?
Thanks again,

Sun JRE is the Sun Java engine.
Microsoft VM is the obsolete Microsoft Java engine.
You MUST NOT have both checked. It is okay not to have either.

Opal,

I had the exact same problem with Internet Explorer last night. I scanned
for viruses, reinstalled IE6, and ran various maintenance tools to no avail.
I was able to get back on the Internet using an old version of Netscape that
I have installed. That let me check out the message board. Frank's advice
was very helpful. After eliminating the possibility of the CommonName agent
and the trojan horse virus, I uninstalled the Google toolbar. This did the
trick!

If you have the Google toolbar installed with IE, just go to
Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs and find it. Uninstall it and
see if that works for you. I don't know if it is necessary, but I rebooted
after uninstalling Google toolbar.

Thanks again to Frank. Now I can go work in the yard instead of spending
all day banging my head against the keyboard.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! I had the same problem and have been working for
two days to resolve it with no luck until this posting. I did find several
virusus and spyware through the process. Once you delete GOOGLE You may want
to check www.housecall.antivirus.com. This is a free website and does a very
nice job scanning your computer and removing spyware and viruses. I have
NORTON Antivirus on fulltime and still had 7 viruses!!
