Run Time Error Shut Downs

I have been using Word 97 and have recently switched to Word2002. At any given moment I get a message that I have encountered a run time error and that the program will shut down - I have removed the Word program - reinstalled the older Word97 and then reinstalled a newer Word program, but continue to have the problem. Is there any way to fix this?
 
Did you copy or preserve your templates and add-ins? If you have macros (eg
in normal.dot) that you kept from your old version, these might be the
problem.
