a *much* smaller download than the entire knoppix distro

And devoid of most features you'll need to really try Linux. It allows you
a look at the environment and certain programs, but I can't get it to
detect or install my sound card. I have one of the few Winmodems that will
actually work with Linux, but I can't make DSL do that either. The full
size distros have a lot of features that make using Linux a lot easier. I
would not recommend DSL for the newbie, but rather for the experienced user
who knows how to get around in it and how to get things done.

I have both Knoppix and PCLinuxOS CDs on order and will see how they do. I
know neither one of them is a full distro either, like Mandrake or Suse,
but they are both supposed to be complete enough to allow you to experience
Linux and do some practical work in. They are also both supposed to be good
at detecting and installing hardware.

The best beginner Linux I have found is the Mepis live-CD.
It runs without problems (as live-CD) and I could use it directly.
I could set up the internet connection and surfed the web with it.

I could read and edit other files on my hard disks with its text editors
and other progs.

I don't like the looks of it, I would prefer other themes, fonts, etc..
but such things are fairly easy to fix later. What's important is that
it works.

There are places where you have to register or pay to download Mepis, but
it is freeware, you just have to find the free download places.
Here, for example:

ftp://ftp.belnet.be/packages/mepis/released/

i've never tried to get a winmodem working with linux...
and although i had no problem getting the damn_small_linux distro to go on
line
using my net card...
the idea was merely for someone to get a small peek at what linux is...

if someone really wants to use linux...i recommend against the bootable cd
or the
"run within windows" method.

It is for sale for 9.95, burnt on a CD and sent to your door.
http://store.mepis.com/home.php

I do not know if this sum includes shipment or not. I hope it is the
total price.

If that is too expensive you might be able to find somebody in your part
of the world who can burn it and send it on a CD.
