Run Computer From Anywhere?

Is there a way that, when I'm traveling, I can access and run my PC at
home from anywhere I can get an Internet connection? If so, what
should I watch out for? If software is needed, what would you consider
the top contenders?

Open the Help and Support app on the start menu, type into the search box:

remote desktop

I think the problem with this is that there has to be someone at the
host computer who will approve the access. I'm looking for a way to
access my own computer from afar - perhaps with a password.

Remote Desktop (if you have the right version of Windows)...
UltraVNC (otherwise)...

Port forwarding and knowing your external IP address (Dynamic DNS can help
with the latter)...

Secure password on all accounts, perhaps setting up VPN.

Google - your best resource now that you know some of the terminology.

I'll even do a little footwork for you:

If you have Windows XP Home Edition - look into UltraVNC.

you could also try Symantec pcAnywhere 12.0

i used to use version 8(ish), and it was quite responsive, and stable. it's
not cheap though

pcanywhere allows that, works nicely also. You just need to know the ip
address of the pc you want to control and have the "host" running.
