Run at startup

I have had DSL service for about 3 years. The modem is external with a LAN
card. Up until about 2 weeks ago, when I started or reboot the PC, all
services would load and I would be online. Now, everything except DSL runs
and I must manually left click the DSL icon to get online. Nothing has
changed in any startup files I can find including using msconfig,
startuplist.exe, etc. I have Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and several others
recommended on this site and I find nothing wrong. I use Trend Micro
anti-virus SW. The DSL shortcut has a target that is a very long list of
alpha-numerics and pressing find target gets you to "Network Connections".

Any ideas on where to look?

Have you tried placing a copy of this shortcut into your Startup folder?

Yes, I have done that. I try the shortcuts in startup lists to make sure they
work. I can not find what the problem is here.

Placing the shortcut into the Startup folder is equivalent to you
clicking the shortcut manually. You said that you had to left-click
the DSL shortcut manually to get online. It's now happening
automatically. If this does not launch your DSL connection then
please supply ***full*** details, not just a general phrase like
"it does not work". We cannot see your machine!

The shortcut is in the startup folder but the software does not run. I am not
connected to the internet. My email client fails. I can not surf the web.
After I left click the very same icon, I am connected to the internet (with a
notifier to indicate that also), I can retrieve emails and surf the web. I do
not understand why this does not work on its own at startup or reboot.

There is something slightly puzzling about your report. Usually you
double-click a shortcut with your left mouse button in order to
launch it (assuming that your mouse is set to right-handed operation).
You only write "left-click" - you never mention "double"...

Anyway, let's try this little experiment:
- Right-click Start
- Left-click Explore
- Double-click (with the left mouse button!) "Programs"
- Double-click "Startup"
- Is your shortcut visible in this folder?
- What happens when you double-click it?
- When you right-click it, then left-click "Properites", what does it
say under "Target"?

I have my mouse set for single left click, sorry. The shortcut property
target for this icon is a 32 alpha-numeric location. If I left click `Find
Target', I get to the folder `Network Connections' just like in Control Panel.

Perhaps the best thing I can do right now is to remove the icon from this
`Startup' folder. I must start my DSL connection manually anyway. I will come
back to this newsgroup later if I am unable to solve it. Thanks for your
help. I'm glad to have the MVP's and others for backup help.
