I there any way to have the mail program start an run minimized at startup?

Put a shortcut to it in your Startup folder:
C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Startup

You can also find this by right clicking the Start Orb and selecting
Explore.

Right click the shortcut and choose Properties. Look at the options in the
Run box.

No, I can't be more specific. After you right click the Start Orb and
select Explore you will have a Windows Explorer window on the Start Menu
folder. One of the folders under it is Startup. Put your shortcut in
Startup.
