Run As Pop Up

Since installing SP2 I get the annoying Run As popup that says:
Protect My Computer From Unauthorized Program Activity
it has a couple of check box options and my Norton AV won't run anymore
The error message says:
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action.
Create an association in the Folder Options Control panel.

Any ideas as to how to get rid of this pop up. So far all my programs
(except norton) run fine, I just have to click the run as popup twice.

TIA

Hi,

1. Browse to the appropriate Setup.exe or Install.exe program
2. Right click on the setup program and select "Run As..."
3. Uncheck the checkbox "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized
program activity....".

It forces the program to be run with restricted credentials. That option
is part of the NTFS file system which you're using. The more technical
explanation would be as follows:

"When you launch a program in Windows XP Professional with the graphical
RunAs utility, selecting "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized
program activity" runs the program with a restricted token that contains
the S-5-12 SID." - MS Technet

Hope this helps ...... :)

Thanks for trying but that is not the cure. I have been doing that on every
program I want to use. It is not a SP2 issue. Something with User settings I
think. I can't find out anything. I have 2 computers with XP Home and SP2
installed and my main computer is F***ed but the other one is fine???????
I think I will copy my C: drive to d: and reformat C: and reinstall windows?
I am going nuts trying to find out the problem and no one seems to have had
a similar issue. Everything works just that annoying popup that I have to
click on every time.

IF SO
Type regedit in Start Run
Navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell
and delete the default value (which will be runas). Do NOT delete the subkey of the same name.

IF NOT
Type regedit in Start Run
Navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell
[it get different from here]
Edit menu - New - Key
name it open
select the key open
Edit menu - New - Key
name it command
select the key command then double click (default) in the other pane
enter exactly
"%1" %*
if you get confused runas has an identical command.

Just to let everyone know, David Candy's tip below (IF NOT) helped me
immensly.
I edited my registry, rebooted and everything back to normal. Don't know
what happened to cause the problem but is fixed now. Possibly a program
called Tuneup changed my original registry?

A virus cleaner perhaps. If /If not was if Open was on the r/c menu.
