How do I find out the size of a user's rules? I have a user whose rules
just seem to stop working

Hi,

There is not a limit to how many rules can be associated with the Inbox,
but rather there is a limit to how much space those rules can take up. This
means the number of rules is not important, but rather that the amount of
space available for the rules is finite (32 kb). This limit was in effect
for Outlook 97/98/2000/2002/2003. Also, the size that is reflected by the
*.rwz file does not correspond exactly to the size that is registered on
the server for the rules. The fact that they are "client-side" rules does
not make any difference in the amount of space available for rules.
Client-side means that the rules will only run when there is a client
running against the mailbox.

The Exchange Server has a maximum limit of 32 kilobytes (KB) for storage of
rules. This size up-limit is hard-coded and cannot be customized.

However, I would like to provide you with a way that may allow you to
create more rules. A solution for a client with multiple rules with
distribution lists with many names might be to create a distribution list
in the GAL. Rules vary in size, but some rules can be significantly larger
when they involve multiple recipients in a forward action. Each recipient
can add up to 500 bytes to the size of the rule.

As a rough estimate, the simplest rules take from 200 to 500 bytes. Rules
involving recipients add approximately 500 bytes per recipient. A rule that
forwards a message to five recipients can be over 3 KB in size. When rules
involve several recipients, it is best to create a distribution list and
use the distribution list as the recipient. This allows more rules to be
created before reaching the 32 KB rule limit. Personal distribution lists
are not allowed in rules; only distribution lists created through the
Microsoft Exchange Server administration program.

Hope this information helps!

Have a nice day!

I wasn't asking what the limit is. I have read the KB article that you are
quoting from. I would like to know how to find out the size of the users
rules. I have emplyed the below solution, however, the rule contains about
40 distribution lists.

Hi,

It is nice to hear from you.

However, I would like to let you know that we are unable to check the
detailed size used for rule on the Exchange server.

Have a nice day!

Hi,

I would like to add following information for your reference:

Microsoft Exchange Server has a maximum limit of 32 kilobytes (KB) for
storage of rules. Rules vary in size, but some rules can be significantly
larger when they involve multiple recipients in a forward action. Each
recipient can add up to 500 bytes to the size of the rule. As a rough
estimate, the simplest rules take from 200 to 500 bytes. Rules involving
recipients add approximately 500 bytes per recipient. A rule that forwards
a message to five recipients, can be over 3 KB in size.

When rules involve several recipients, it is best to create a distribution
list and use the distribution list as the recipient. This allows more rules
to be created before reaching the 32 KB rule limit. Personal distribution
lists are not allowed in rules; only distribution lists created through the
Microsoft Exchange Server administration program.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to post back!

Have a nice day!
