rules in error--- error

I can't seem to get my Outlook2000 to follow the rules in my organize
folder. I get a lot of junk mail and set up rules to permanently delete
certain e-mail that has specific words in the subject line. When I turn it
on and run it, it works, but when the mail comes in, it turns itself off and
the error message I get is that I'm not authorized to do this.

Another rule I created is that I have other mail from a mailing list sent to
a specific folder, all that mail comes from a specific e-mail address. When
mail arrives, the program turns off the rule and the error message is
"cannot move files to folder."

I've tried running the "detect and repair" option but that didn't do it.
I'm still getting the same error. Can someone help me with this?

Thanks
Renae

Hi Renae-

I have the exact same problem. I don't know of a fix for
Outlook 2000, but this is fixed in Outlook XP.

You're having a rule conflict. One rule runs on a message,
but then Outlook continues trying to run the other rules
on it.

For instance, I have the Junk Senders rule set up, but I
have another rule that looks for messages with "Online
Pharmacy", "Xanax", etc. in their subjects. Both rules are
set to Delete the messages. Then, a message comes in which
is flagged as being from a Junk Sender, but also happens
to have "Xanax" (or one of the other words I set up) in
it. The first rule deletes the message, but then the
second rule tries to delete it too- and can't find the
message. You get the confusing error message, about not
having permission, and the second rule is turned off until
you turn it back on.

This is an EXTREMELY frustrating bug. In Outlook XP/2002,
there is an option in the setup for each Rule to "Process
this Rule, then Stop running other Rules on it" or
something to that effect. Choosing this option fixes the
problem.

If anyone knows of a way to avoid this problem in Outlook
2000, PLEASE enlighten us ASAP!!

Looks like I spoke too soon. What you want to do is this:
for each Rule that does something like delete a junk mail
or move it to a specific folder, click on the Modify
button in the Rules Wizard. Click NEXT twice. Then, on the
dialog that says "What do you want to do with this
message", in addition to the box you've checked that
says "Delete it" or "permanently Delete it" or whichever
you chose, scroll all the way to the bottom and click in
the box next to "stop processing more rules". This will
prevent your Rules from fighting with each other.

I just figured this out, and boy, is it ever nice to not
have to constantly turn my Rules back on after a Rule
conflict!
